Branford's board battles over budget. School sports may be on the cutting blockCrystal Haynes, WTNH NEWS CHANNEL 8 A budget battle in Branford has some student activities in jeopardy. The news has caused such an uproar that a special board of ed meeting was held, Saturday. Parents and students got a chance to sit down with the school board to present their ideas for cost savings. Cutting boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball at Walsh Intermediate in Branford -- $33,000 in savings. Implementing a Pay to Play program system-wide is $75,000 in savings. Brandford Board of Ed runs the numbers for parents and students but they are hoping to find another way like get rid of the interactive "smart boards" in classrooms. "I don't think I benefit from it," said student Chase Folwer. "They are touchy when you write on them and I think you could cut money from there to help with sports." The total proposed budget for the 2010-2011 school year is over $48 million which is up nearly four percent. The board said the cuts would be tough for everyone. But the money's got to come from somewhere. "These are terrible decisions because there's going to be people unhappy no matter what we do," said Frank Carrano of the School Board. Another school board meeting is set for Monday 2/8/2010 - 7:00pm Walsh Inter. School.

Branford (WTNH) - Three men working at a home in Branford were shocked while lowering a ladder from a roof. It happened at a home near on Meadow Street around 3:30pm. The men worked for All Aspects of Carpentry, a business based out of North Branford. One man was on the roof of the house, two were on the ground when they began to lower the ladder. The ladder struck the power lines, shocking all three. Chris Roberts was also working with the crew. "I heard the spark, turned around and basically saw the ladder falling. That was all that I saw," he said. Officials say the men endured about 13,200 volts of electricity; the substation is only about a quarter of a mile away from the accident scene. "This is not a little tingle like you'd get in your house. This is heavy duty voltage going down the street," said Chief Jack Ahern, Branford Fire Department. Two of the men went into cardiac arrest. One was alert and breathing. All have been taken to an area hospital for treatment. "They were in and out of consciousness, but basically they were foaming and gurgling and not looking very good," said Roberts. The victims have been identified as 57-year old Billy Twyford, the owner of All Aspects of Carpentry, and brothers, Rory and Travis Moody of Branford http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/news/new_haven_cty/3-roofers-fall-shocked
Posted 1/5/2010 Branford (WTNH) - A Branford firefighter was taken to the hospital after receiving an electrical shock fighting an early morning fire. Firefighters were called out to Lanphiers Cove Road for a fire at a cottage. The fire on the small road near the western side of Branford Harbor seriously damaged the cottage and damaged a second. "When we got here there was one cottage well involved in fire, extending to a second cottage," Deputy Chief Ron Mullen said. The firefighter received the shock when a live electrical wire fell and landed in a puddle. The injured firefighter was not identified by name. "It does not appear to be a serious injury," the deputy chief said. Two firefighters also fell fighting the fire when the water they sprayed on the buildings turned into ice. "Both cottages were unoccupied as it's a summer residence location here," Dep. Chief Mullen said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/news/new_haven_cty/firefighter-shocked-battling-fire
Posted 12/31/2009 Update to the
Christmas Eve Puppy Rescue made by the Branford Police.
On Saturday December 26, 2009 Animal Control Officer (ACO) Laura
Burban along with Officer Philip Ramey conducted a follow-up interview of the
dog’s owner concerning the puppies that were taken for safe keeping on December
24, 2009 by the Branford Police. As part of the follow-up, officers were made aware that the
puppy’s owner had two other dogs in the Branford Motel, one of which had since
given birth to a number of additional puppies. ACO Burban and Officer Ramey examined
all of the dogs and the puppies and all appeared in good health.
ACO Burban decided it was in the best interest of the case
to contact State ACO Todd Curry to continue the investigation because of the
number of animals involved.
Based upon the totality of the circumstances, including the
inability of the owner to care for the dogs, ACO Burban, State ACO Curry along
with the assistance of Branford Police removed the two adult dogs and six
additional puppies from the motel.
All of the adult dogs and puppies have been signed over to
the Town of Branford
and are in the care of the Daniel Cosgrove Branford Animal Shelter.
The shelter is accepting donations to help care for these
dogs as well as the other animals at the facility. Donations can be made to the
Branford Animal Shelter at 749
East Main St Branford, CT 06405.
Posted 12/30/2009 PEDESTRIAN STRUCK IN CROSSWALK – BRANFORD POLICE PROVIDE SAFETY REMINDERS. Sushila Patel of Hoadley Rd. Branford was struck by a motorist as she crossed Main St. in a crosswalk last evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. Patel was transported to an area medical facility for life threatening injuries by paramedics from the Branford Fire Department. The accident investigation is on going by the Branford Police Department. Chief John DeCarlo said although Ms. Sushila was in a crosswalk, he must remind pedestrians to use extreme caution this time of year as they walk and run along the side of the roadways, especially on the Route 1 corridor. “The roads become constricted by snow-banks and many of the areas are dark and poorly lit,” said the Chief, “but most importantly, pedestrians must remember not to wear dark clothing. Something light or reflective is the safest for being visible to motorists.”

Police officers were credited with saving the lives of eight new born puppies
during the early morning hours of Christmas Eve.
Sgt. Gregory
Watrous said Officer Phil Ramey and Officer Joseph Peterson were conducting a
surveillance of businesses and motels in the early morning hours as part of a
proactive measure in reducing burglaries and thefts from vehicles.
“Officer Ramey
noticed a man emerge from a motel carrying a cooler. He watched as the man
aimlessly began walking around the side of the roadway and the officer became
suspicious.” Watrous said. “When he stopped the man for identification he
learned that there were seven newborn puppies in the airtight cooler.”
Although the
investigation is not completed, both Ramey and Peterson, who was a past K-9
handler, determined that the man was unable to care for the animals and he was
looking for a place to discard them. Further investigation reveled that the
eighth puppy was in the motel room with the puppy’s mother.
All of the animals were transported to the State Street
Animal Hospital
in New Haven
for evaluation. “I think we gave these guys an early Christmas present.”
Officer Peterson said. “They wouldn’t have survived in this cold weather.”
