United Way brings together the caring power of people to create change in our community and to improve lives. We strive to be a catalyst for identifying community needs and opportunities for change by focusing on specific community priority areas and initiatives to engage donors, organizations and community leaders to improve the social and civic health of our region. We are advancing the common good and creating opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on the three key building blocks of Education, Income and Health. The United Way movement creates long lasting community change by addressing the underlying causes of problems that prevent progress in these areas.
It takes both time and money to make a significant difference in communities across America . A contribution to United Way improves lives and builds stronger communities. United Way, together with many community partners, works to reduce economic and education disparity through investments focused on our region’s greatest needs: jobs and housing; children and youth; health and civic engagement; emergency food and shelter; and disaster preparedness and response.
United Way of Greater New Haven helps promote volunteerism by providing an online database of volunteer opportunities and organizing special volunteer activities. Whether it’s reading to children, preparing tax returns for hard-working families, or delivering meals to homebound seniors, there are hundreds of volunteer options available throughout the year for you, your family, friends and co-workers. In 2009, about 1,800 people volunteered throughout Greater New Haven logging in over 20,000 hours, at a value, according to the Independent Sector, of $27.02 per hour.
